Huntington Palisades
“The Hunt,” more formally known as Huntington Palisades is located in Pacific Palisades west of Chautauqua Blvd. and east of Potrero Canyon Park. It’s within a short distance of Palisades Village, the beach, and the park. The streets in The Hunt are very walkable and neighbors are friendly and approachable.
Huntington Palisades was initially planned by Abbot Kinney, the developer of Venice Beach. Kinney has a fascinating history. An east coast transplant, Kinney became friends with John Muir and was involved in the early establishment of national forests and parks. He established the first forest station in the U.S. in Rustic Canyon. But Kinney’s early plans to develop the Palisades were not successful, and in 1888, he sold his property to Collis Huntington, uncle of rail magnate Henry Huntington. The name of Huntington Palisades was born, although the property was planned and initial homes were built by Santa Monica Land and Water Company president Robert C. Gillis.
The semi-circular drives and landscaped boulevards of The Hunt were Gillis’ vision, aided by Frederick Olmstead, who planned New York’s Central Park along with his younger brother.
Huntington Palisades has its own property owner’s corporation, HPPOC which governs the covenants and restrictions on building and landscaping for the neighborhood of approximately 477 homes. Dues assessments vary in the community depending upon lot size.
Homes in The Hunt range from modest 3 bedroom bungalows on 7,000 square foot lots to estate homes on the bluff with stunning coastal views. Bluff homes may range up to 9 and 10 bedrooms, over 13,000 square feet, with 33,000 square foot lot sizes. With an average home sale price of over $7 million, The Hunt is an exclusive neighborhood that retains a neighborly vibe along with some of the best quality of life and ocean views in Los Angeles.
