Las Flores Beach
Las Flores means “the flowers” in Spanish. And, like a flower, this neighbourhood is beautiful but also somewhat fragile. The homes in Las Flores sit on busy Pacific Coast Highway, between the Big Rock and La Costa Beach communities. The backyard for most of these homes is, literally, the Pacific Ocean. When the tide is low, homeowners can enjoy a stretch of sand that is relatively private since this area can be hard for non-locals to access. When the tide is high, however, this beach can be non-existent. Across Pacific Coast, Highway from this neighbourhood is steep bluffs. Unfortunately, during heavy rains, mud and debris can sometimes be washed down those slopes, which has actually caused Pacific Coast Highway to be shut down on a few occasions.
Las Flores — which is also affectionately known as Dog Beach by the locals — is the site of some of the oldest homes in Malibu. While some of the original modest bungalows still remain, many others have been torn down and replaced with stunning modern and contemporary homes with floor to ceiling walls of glass. All of the houses in this neighbourhood boast amazing views of the ocean and the Queen’s Necklace, the popular nickname given to Santa Monica Bay.
Some of these houses also come with beach-friendly features, such as special storage areas for surfboards or outdoor showers so that a homeowner can wash off the salt and sand before entering their residences. Prices for homes in Las Flores typically start around $3 million and then head upwards. There are also some condo units, duplexes and triplexes available on Las Flores Beach.
Las Flores Beach is not just popular with potential homeowners, but also for investors looking for rental properties. This beach is known for having a number of pricey short- and long-term vacation rentals available that can bring in a good income. For example, in 2017, Oscar-nominated actor and filmmaker Ed Norton rented out his two-unit, 1920s Las Flores Beach cottage for $15,000 a month, according to Variety. That two-unit property, which contains a total of three bedrooms and two bathrooms, was put up for sale in March of 2018 and was listed at $5.25 million.
Las Flores Beach is located close to two popular Malibu restaurants, Duke’s and Moonshadows. Other dining options, as well as retail stores, can be found at the Malibu Country Mart and at the Malibu Lumber Yard.
