Malibu is an affluent beachfront city located just 30 miles west of Downtown Los Angeles. The Pacific Coast Highway runs along Malibu’s scenic 21-mile coastline, and most of the city’s residents live within a couple hundred yards of the coastal thoroughfare. The city is known for its many beaches, spectacular ocean and city views, and breathtaking real estate. It is the epitome of casual — yet luxurious — oceanfront living.
Malibu is surrounded by the ocean and numerous state parks. More specifically, Topanga and nearby Pacific Palisades are to the east; the Santa Monica Mountains and Calabasas, Agoura Hills, and Woodland Hills are to the north; the Pacific Ocean is to the south; and Ventura County is to the east. Due to the vast open space and surrounding mountains, the city exudes an air of privacy and remoteness. However, the rest of Los Angeles is easily accessible via the canyon roads and PCH.
Known for developing the first working laser, HRL Laboratories is the largest employed in Malibu. The city is also home to Pepperdine University which is located just outside of the Malibu city limits, but most people still consider the prestigious university part of the city. Malibu also hosts numerous annual events, including the Malibu Arts Festival and Malibu International Film Festival. The Malibu Civic Center area hosts numerous popular shopping centers.
Malibu real estate houses Hollywood and business elites in sprawling oceanfront estates and impressive homes in the bluffs overlooking the city. The real estate in Malibu is undoubtedly some of the most coveted in Los Angeles. The city offers an escape from the nonstop action of Los Angeles, and individuals flock to the beachfront oases the city offers. Furthermore, Malibu is widely known for its historic and innovative architecture.
Along with its prime real estate, Malibu is known for its beaches. In fact, the city was first settled by the Chumash Native Americans who named the city “The Surf Sounds Loudly”. There are numerous public beaches along the breathtaking coastline, with some of the most well-known being Surfrider, Zuma, Malibu, and Pointe Dume state beaches. Like the name implies, Surfrider Beach is a world-class surfing hub located near the Malibu Pier. It was also named the first World Surfing Reserve. Unsurprising, Malibu’s beaches are all popular filming locations. Point Mugu State Park, Malibu Creek State Park, and Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach are also located along the famous coastline.
Away from the beaches, Malibu offers even more recreation activities. Located north of the city in the nearby mountains, The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area offers ample opportunities for biking, hiking, and horseback riding throughout an extensive trail system. There are numerous other parks in the bluffs above Malibu that showcase some of the best views in Los Angeles. Malibu is undeniably one of Los Angeles County’s quintessential affluent beachfront enclaves.
