Big Rock Mesa is one of the closest Malibu neighbourhoods to Santa Monica. The collection of stunning view homes, private enclaves, modest cottages, and estates is nestled on the hillside above Pacific Coast Highway and Big Rock Beach. The homes are accessible via Big Rock Drive which winds in the hills beside Piedra Gorda (“Big/Fat Rock”) Canyon. All homes are custom-built and are located along Big Rock Drive and smaller streets including Rockport Way, Seaboard Road, Little Rock Way, Rockcroft Drive and Whitecap Way.

Hillsides are steep in Big Rock and a number of creative solutions have been found to clear brush from the neighbourhood. Goats have been successfully used to munch unwanted vegetation. Homes were initially built on the mesa and in the canyon shortly after World War II. Over time, Big Rock has become a family-oriented neighbourhood with a friendly vibe. Lots range from 11,000 square feet in smaller tract homes to 3 and 4-acre estates with main homes and guesthouses.

Although Big Rock’s down to earth family vibe could suggest there are no celebrities in the neighbourhood, Star Wars’ Mark Hamill and before his death, Bonanza’s Pernell Roberts, were longtime residents. A well-known landslide in the 1980s damaged some homes in the neighbourhood. Owners received a $97 million settlement from local government agencies, a record at the time. Homes regained their value and are now protected by landslide maintenance services and technology as part of Malibu’s Landslide Maintenance District 98-1.

The higher you travel on Big Rock Mesa‘s winding roads, the greater the chance of finding an exclusive estate property. You may locate a gated luxury estate that includes a primary residence, guest house, pool, spa, and tennis court. You may also find architectural gems including mid-century homes built in accordance with the principles of Organic Architecture, blending hill, rock, sea, and wood. Views from homes situated high in Big Rock Mesa are breathtaking, with unobstructed vistas from Point Dume to Santa Monica.

Many are interested in Big Rock Mesa’s homes due to their unique character and the neighbourhood’s proximity to Santa Monica and the city as well as the rest of Malibu’s 27 miles of coastline. Those who stay value the serene natural environment and warm neighbourhood atmosphere within a few minutes of the metropolis.
