Playa del Rey is one of Los Angeles’ most picturesque and down-to-earth beach communities, quieter and less crowded than Redondo, Manhattan, or Hermosa Beaches. South of the Marina and north of LAX and El Segundo, Playa del Rey boasts long, sandy Dockweiler Beach and the Ballona channel. On a quiet morning standing on the pedestrian bridge between Playa and the Marina, you may see a sea lion frolicking in the channel.

The intimate hamlet of Playa del Rey West is the beachside portion of the neighborhood, accessed by Culver Blvd. Playa del Rey West’s eastern boundary is Pershing Blvd. and western edge is seaside drive Vista Del Mar overlooking Dockweiler Beach. Locals know they can surf, run, and bike within minutes of their home and even enjoy nature-watching in the Ballona Wetlands. The Wetlands are one of the most unique areas along LA’s coastline and are preserved as a natural home to migratory birds and wildlife.

Playa del Rey means “King’s Beach” in Spanish and this King is a down-to-earth monarch who won’t accept second-best in beachside living. Homes in Playa are increasing in demand along with the tech industry centered in Venice and Santa Monica. Sometimes referred to as “Silicon Beach,” Playa del Rey West offers an eclectic choice of homes from modern architectural oceanfront estates to unassuming beach cottages with the most up-to-date amenities.

The neighborhood north of Culver Blvd. surrounding Del Rey Lagoon has a slightly different vibe from the ocean view neighborhoods located south of Culver. A tiny enclave centered on Speedway and Pacific Ave. includes beach homes which are directly on the sand. Homeowners in this small beachside patch can wake to the sound of crashing waves and run to the surf from their back door. View and executive homes abound in the hillside streets between Pershing and Vista Del Mar. Home styles range from multi-story modern architectural beach estates to Mediterranean and Tuscan-inspired villas.
Playa del Rey can have the feeling of “being away from it all.” It has its own laid-back nightlife within walking distance of most homes. From Mo’s Bar to Cafe Pinguini, you will find a great meal and neighborly good times in the tiny Playa village. Living in Playa, you are located within minutes of Lincoln Blvd. and Venice, Santa Monica, and other Westside destinations.
