Located in the city of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, Tarzana offers a rich history, current amenities, and a high level of charm and activity to appreciate. It is built on the site of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original ranch, and named after his Tarzan character. The property was purchased by Burroughs in 1919. As an affluent community, Tarzana has much to offer to everyone from children to the elderly. It is especially popular with families and baby boomers, as much of what is offered there caters to those two groups. The city is nearly nine square miles, and borders Encino to the east, Woodland Hills to the west, Reseda to the north, and Topanga State Park to the south.
Tarzana has a low crime rate, and a myriad of things to experience and enjoy. It is notable as a filming location, as well. Some episodes of The Bad Girls Club, Intervention, and Six Feet Under have been filmed in Tarzana. Additionally, Akeelah and the Bee, and The Karate Kid were filmed at Portola Middle School. Ventura Blvd is home to the Tarzana branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, and for people who want to get out in nature there is Caballero Canyon. It offers trails for mountain biking and hiking, as well as amazing views of the valley. Dogs on a leash are also allowed on some of the trails, and there are no permits or fees needed for those who want to hike the canyon.
The most recent census indicated that nearly 38,000 people call Tarzana home, many of them choosing the location because of the mild climate and long list of attractions to appreciate. For families with children in the area, Tarzana offers seven different elementary schools based on the family’s location within the town. High school students are served by Birmingham, Taft, and Reseda high schools, and there is one private school in the area, as well. The Tarzana Recreation Center is a popular location for families, couples, and singles, with barbecue pits, basketball courts, a baseball diamond, a gym, a community room, play areas for children, volleyball courts, and picnic tables.
