Peace, quiet, and a rural lifestyle can be found in Tarzana, and it’s located in a little neighborhood called Melody Acres. Situated just north of the Ventura freeway, this equestrian community hearkens back to Tarzana’s past, when it was still open ranch land. As for its interesting moniker — it’s rumored that this neighborhood’s name honors one of its earliest residents, a singing cowboy.

Today, Melody Acres is a rural equestrian oasis of approximately 300 homes. It is graced with beautiful old-growth trees, gardens, vineyards, and — because this community is zoned for “residential agricultural” — large lots that must be at least 17,500 square feet in size. There are even a few one-acre lots still available in Melody Acres. So don’t be surprised if you buy a house and your next-door neighbors have goats, pigs, chickens, and, of course, horses and donkeys.  Corrals, barns, chicken coops, and aviaries dot the properties, and it’s not uncommon for the sounds and smell of livestock to punctuate the air. Adding to the country vibe? Melody Acres’ streets don’t have gutters or curbs and there are also no sidewalks.

The homes in this community range from the original, one-story houses, which were charming but small – approximately 800 square feet – to larger properties that have been remodeled extensively. Style-wise, you’ll find many interesting options, from ranches to homes that resemble Spanish haciendas to stunning Mediterranean villas. Because of the large lot sizes and quiet semi-rural atmosphere, properties in Melody Acres are highly desirable, especially the ones that remain under the $1 million mark.

And while this charming community feels like it’s miles away from the city, you’ll actually be just a quick drive away from a myriad of dining and shopping options. Melody Acres is also close to the Ventura Freeway. Hate to drive and would rather take the Metro? No worries. You’ll also enjoy quick access to the Orange Metro Line if you decide to purchase a home in Melody Acres.

This community also boasts an active association called the Melody Acres Neighborhood Association that works hard to maintain its unique rural atmosphere. It also strives to bring Melody Acres residents together at least once a year by throwing an annual block party that features many family-oriented activities.

So if you’re searching for horse property in the San Fernando Valley or just a home that boasts a quiet, country setting, then Melody Acres may be the right neighborhood for you.
