Topanga, also often called Topanga Canyon, is one of the most unique areas in Los Angeles. Nestled in historic Topanga Canyon between the San Fernando Valley and Malibu, Topanga has a number of smaller neighborhoods with diverse characters and microclimates/environments. A refuge for artists and musicians that some publications call a “hippie chic haven,” Topanga Canyon is rich in cultural history dating back to Native American days. From “Top of Topanga” to the coast, you will find many unique and gracious homes and properties along Topanga Canyon and Old Topanga Canyon Road and other neighborhoods and regions of Topanga. Some of Topanga’s independent, free-wheeling feeling dates back to Waltons “grandpa” actor Will Geer, who settled in the canyon in the 1950s during the famed Hollywood “blacklist.” Geer established gardens and an open-air theater which still hosts performances today as the Theatricum Botanicum. Each house in Topanga has a unique vibe and tends to reflect its owners and builders. Weather in Topanga varies widely depending on the canyon’s microclimates. Pale fog from the ocean rolls up the canyon, and the western portion of Topanga near Malibu enjoys significantly cooler, wetter weather than regions which are higher in elevation or closer to the San Fernando Valley. Neighborhoods include Central Topanga, Upper Topanga, Lower Topanga, Fernwood, Glenview, and Old Topanga, which is adjacent to Calabasas Highlands, a nearby community which also includes custom homes and properties. All homes in Topanga are custom-built and located on diverse lots which may include riparian woodlands, small streams, and hillside natural environments. Topanga is surrounded by Topanga State Park and other open space preserves, including Red Rock Canyon. Lower portions of the canyon are accessible to Malibu’s beaches in minutes. Topanga’s long history and storied reputation as a bohemian artist’s retreat and musicians’ haven continues. Topanga Elementary School is a highly-ranked public school that benefits from music and art lessons taught by a number of famous artists and musicians that live in the canyon. Students who live in Topanga can choose to attend either Palisades Charter High School, which is nationally-ranked, or Taft High School, which is the #1 ranked high school in the Los Angeles school district. Topanga boasts some of the most unique properties in Los Angeles, from forest retreats to large estate properties with on-site music and art studios. Originally a home for the native Chumash people, the beautiful atmosphere of Topanga Canyon remains a home for those who enjoy its pristine natural beauty and environment today.
