    Laguna Beach’s Village neighborhood refers to the streets and homes located south of Park Avenue, west of Temple Hills Drive, and north of Calliope Street. Some of Laguna’s most iconic locations are located in the Village, and it is the heart of the community. Everything in “the Village” is human-sized and human-scaled, because the Village itself as an association that began in the 1970s to preserve coastal views. The Village Laguna association effectively instituted the city’s 36-foot height limit for structures in the area. The original mission has expanded to include natural habitats and open space, as well as scholarships, disaster aid, picnics and festivals, and the annual Charm House Tour.
    Located in central Laguna, the Village is home to notable structures and residences, including early California developer Frank A. Miller’s “Mariona” estate, also referred to as the “Castle by the Sea.” With 120 feet of private ocean frontage, Miller’s estate was built by the same architect and contractors as the historic Mission Inn in Riverside. The architecture and landscaping of this estate cannot be replicated today. The same is true of a number of other historic homes in the Village, although they may not be as grand as the “Castle by the Sea.”
    In few other areas of Laguna is the individual artistic vision of so many of the beach community’s early residents and visionaries reflected with such charm and elegance. If you are seeking oceanfront properties, many are located along Gaviota Drive, including a number of beachfront estates in the $10 million to $20 million range. Some refer to this part of Laguna Beach as the “hip district” and it’s hard to deny that description when the community’s best restaurants and lounges are within steps of many of the Village’s homes. Laguna’s art and design tradition is on full view with the many contemporary architectural homes and green designs which somehow blend seamlessly with historic beach cottages and the romantic Mission revival/Tudor cottage vibe of the older shops and homes.
    Laguna Beach is widely regarded as one of the most progressive, eco-friendly, sustainable communities in the U.S. Residents will tell you that the quality of life the community enjoys wasn’t guaranteed. In the late 1960s, high-rise developers were eager to tear down every building in the Village and along the coast to build massive view-blocking condominiums. There’s a place for high-rise living, but it isn’t along one of the most scenic stretches of coastline in the world.
    In addition to surfing coves, dramatic cliffs, and white sand, the Village is home to many of Laguna’s most famous artists and galleries. The hillsides host picturesque view homes, private dream cottages, and a terraced organic garden. Only in Laguna’s Village can you tour an organic garden and buy the produce at the Saturday Farmer’s Market the very next week.
